Battery Guide for Electric Outboards
To power your electric outboard, you will need a Deep Cycle (Leisure) Battery. Based on our experience, an 85Ah battery is an ideal size for most applications.
⚡ Important: Some motors require 24V, which means you’ll need two 12V batteries connected in series.
How to Calculate Running Time
A simple way to estimate running time is:
Battery Capacity (Ah) ÷ Motor Amp Draw = Approx. Running Time (hours)
💡 Rule of Thumb: An electric outboard will generally draw 1 Amp per Pound of Thrust at maximum speed.
Example:
-
Motor: 55LB thrust
-
Battery: 85Ah
-
Calculation: 85 ÷ 55 = ~1.5 hours of full-power use
👉 At lower speeds, the motor draws significantly less current (around ¼ of the maximum draw), meaning your battery will last much longer when cruising slowly.
